About the assessment
The CBTA Restricted Motorcycle Licence (class 6R) is the second step on the New Zealand licence pathway. Passing lets you remove your L plate and starts the 12 month time clock running toward your full motorcycle licence — a major milestone for any rider.
At Revs, we prepare you fully for the on-road assessment — covering road position, hazard awareness, intersection behaviour, and all the CBTA competencies your assessor will be scoring you on. A LAMS-compliant hire bike is available if you don't have your own.
What you'll work on
Checking mirrors, scanning your whole environment including blind spot checks. Completed efficiently to maintain full awareness of your surroundings.
Roundabouts, give-ways, stop signs, and traffic light procedures — executed smoothly and with confidence under assessment conditions.
Selecting and maintaining appropriate speeds for road conditions, speed zones, and upcoming hazards — no guesswork, just good judgement.
Spotting and responding to developing hazards before they become dangerous — the core of defensive motorcycle riding.
Maintaining a safe following gap that accounts for stopping distance, road surface, and visibility — assessed throughout the ride.
Inclusions
Your qualified Revs instructor rides with you and briefs you on every aspect of what the assessor will be looking for.
Don't have a LAMS-approved motorcycle? Speak to us in advance and we'll arrange a compliant hire bike for your assessment day.
Your CBTA Restricted assessment is delivered on the day by an NZTA-approved assessor. Pass with us and there's no need to sit a separate VTNZ restricted practical test.
We'll talk you through exactly what to expect on assessment day, what gear to wear and bring, and how to prepare your bike if you're using your own.
Sessions run throughout the week. If you need to reschedule, let us know and we'll find a date that works.
